Do not ignore a CRA letter
A letter from the Canada Revenue Agency is stressful, but most can be resolved when you respond properly and on time. Many are routine review requests asking for receipts. Others are audits of your personal, corporate, payroll or HST returns. Quartax reviews what the CRA is asking for, organizes your documents and responds for you.
What we help with
- Processing and matching reviews asking you to support credits or deductions
- Desk and field audits of personal, corporate, payroll or GST/HST returns
- Payroll reviews, including PIER letters
- Reassessments and Notices of Objection when you disagree with the CRA
- Taxpayer relief requests to cancel or reduce penalties and interest
- Voluntary disclosures to correct past errors before the CRA contacts you
- Payment arrangements when you owe more than you can pay at once
How we handle a CRA review or audit
- Review the letter. We confirm what the CRA wants, the deadline and the tax years involved.
- Get authorized. You authorize us as your representative, so we can speak with the CRA directly.
- Build the file. We gather and organize receipts, statements and explanations.
- Respond and follow up. We submit your response, answer the auditor's questions and keep you informed.
- Fix the cause. If weak records or filings caused the issue, we set up a system so it does not happen again.
Deadlines that matter
CRA letters set a date to respond, often 30 days. If you disagree with an assessment or reassessment, a Notice of Objection must generally be filed within 90 days of the date on the notice. For individuals, the deadline is the later of 90 days after the notice and one year after the filing due date for that tax year. Missing these dates can limit your options, so contact us as soon as a letter arrives.
Prevention is cheaper than an audit
Clean books and properly supported returns are the best defence. Our bookkeeping, HST filing and corporate tax services are built to keep you CRA ready all year.
